Youth Sexual Health

Helen Farrell and Christina Chitty

Helen Farrell works in school health and has a passion and

spirit for youth sexual health. Helen has been involved in the

development of the sexual health booklet used in schools, a

member of the roundtable for youth sexual health and has

actively been involved in the Provincial Sexual Health Strategy.

Recreation Options for Persons with Disabilities

Kevin Penny - Coordinator University Disability Services

and Paul Tingley - Olympic Para-Sailing Member

This session talks about recreation for persons with disabilities

and what?s available in the Province. Also, the session will deal

with integrating people with disabilities into a physical education

program.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

Keynote Speaker ? Farida Gabbani

In August of 2003, Farida Gabbani joined the Department of Health Promotion and Protection (then

Office of Health Promotion) as the Senior Director responsible for the physical activity, sport and

recreation responsibility center. Ms. Gabbani has a long, distinguished

career in the education and physical activity fields.

Ms. Gabbani was educated at the University of Liverpool (England) and

became a teacher at the elementary, junior and senior high levels for

many years. She then went on to be a professor of physical education at

the Nova Scotia Teacher?s College. Following this, she was the provincial

Physical and Health Education Consultant with the Department of

Education and then a curriculum consultant with the Chignecto-Central

Regional School Board.

On the volunteer side, Ms. Gabbani?s portfolio is just as distinguished.

She has been an executive council member of the CAHPERD Board, Past

President of CAHPERD, and a board member of the NSSAF, Sport Nova Scotia, the Truro Sport Heritage

Society to name a few. She has coached many teams, refereed and has been and continues to be a

volunteer and fund raiser for sport.

Ms. Gabbani has presented at many national and international conferences in the areas of physical

education and activity. She has worked in Guyana and the Carribean on a Commonwealth Games Sport

Development Project; in Zambia on a teaching physical education project and in Chile on a Chilean

active living project. Ms. Gabbani has also worked with the previous Secretary of State for Amateur

Sport, Denis Coderre chairing his committee on participation.

A long time and now lifetime member of TAPHE, Farida has received many awards, the most dear to her

are the ones she received from her students at the Nova Scotia Teacher?s College and the ones received

from TAPHE.

High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development

The Principles of Healthy Child Development is a workshop

specifically designed for front-line teachers. leaders and coaches

working directly with elementary school aged children. This

workshop will help teachers to create high quality programs

for children in their classes by developing a child-first focus

which puts the five principles of healthy child development into

practice. It is anticipated that this workshop may become part of

the High School Curriculum by September, 2008

This is a revolutionary way of introducing the sport of Softball to

children. Activities are included which foster the involvement of ALL

players, including players with high and low skill levels. The child will

experience excitement, enjoyment and success. Activities and lead-up

games are patterned after informal playground games that promise

an hour of FUN and LOTS OF ACTION . Participants will go home at the

end of the night happy and tired, while improving their fitness level.

cooperation and sportsmanship. The rules promote fair play and

teamwork. An extremely easy game to learn due to size of the

ball and its lightweight.

Promotion and Protection

This session is based on current knowledge about what works in

school-based alcohol and other drug education and is matched

to Nova Scotia junior high Health/Personal Relationships and

Development curriculum outcomes. This session will provide

highlights of the new supplement, including key features, an

overview of the ready-to-use tools for teachers and students,

and an introduction to the companion web site for teachers.

Girls in Physical Education

Gabrielle Riley - Halifax Regional Municipality?s Active

Living Coordinator

?Girls aren?t interested in PE!? If you have thought or said this, this session

is for you! Learn about the issues, discuss your experiences, and

identify strategies to make your PE program or school-based healthy

living initiative more inclusive of the needs, interests and experiences

of girls and young women. This session will share models and practical

tips for elementary and high schools collected through On the Move , a

national initiative to increase opportunities for inactive girls and young

women to participate in sport and physical activity. On the Move is coordinated

by CAAWS, the Canadian Association for the Advancement

of Women and Sport and Physical Activity.

Skate Pass

Skate Pass offers schools a three-part curriculum that teaches beginning,

intermediate, and advanced skateboarding to elementary,

middle school, and high school

physical education classes. The

beginning curriculum is designed

for one week of instruction (two

class periods). The intermediate

and advanced curriculums are

designed for further instruction

which can be taught in on-going

class periods. The curriculums are designed to develop a foundation

of basic skateboarding skills and an understanding of skateboarding

etiquette.

RespectEd: An anti-bullying program

Jill Fraser ? Teacher Trenton Middle School

The Red Cross Beyond the Hurt program is part of a comprehensive

planning model for prevention education. The Beyond the Hurt program

works with students to assist in building the school communities

capacity to respond to bullying and harassment through a comprehensive

prevention planning model. RespectEd is a committee

that was formed at Trenton Middle School in 2005 to help decrease

bullying and increase teacher/student awareness. This presentation

will help educators create their own action plans against bullying.

The role of physical activity within the context of

preventing and managing mental illness in youth

Marie-josée Lefaivre (Ph.D. Student) & Danielle Poulus

(M.Sc.Student)

This presentation will illustrate the role of physical activity within

the context of preventing and managing mental illness, focusing on

anxiety disorders. In addition to reviewing research demonstrating

the positive effects of exercise on mental health (e.g., lower levels

of stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue), we will also review

studies supporting the role of physical exercise as a viable treatment

alternative and/or treatment adjunct for a variety of anxiety and mood

disorders. Finally, we will briefly present ongoing research examining

the relationships between physical activity and anxiety sensitivity (i.e.,

fear and beliefs that anxiety-related physical sensations have harmful

consequences) in adolescents (i.e., PAL students) and young adults

(i.e., undergraduate students).

Michael will give and overview of the key support principles that

can make all the difference for a child?s success in school and

later the work force. He will provide an introduction to common

support principles, the function of the Provincial Autism Centre

and will take particular focus on helping attendees learn from

the advice and experiences of people with autism themselves.

with respect to her program! A must for new teachers!

The Law and You

NSTU Representative

This session will deal with legal issues as they apply to teaching

and Physical Educators in particular. Liability will be discussed

along with many other relevant issues.

The PALS program (Playground Activity Leaders)

The AVRSB has started a PALS program for elementary school

students. Every school in the board is involved and hundreds

of students are now PALS leaders in their schools. The PALS

lead team sends 5 students to three different training sessions

where they learn about conflict resolution, public speaking

skills, teamwork and new games to introduce during lunch and

recess times. This program is helping to engage students on the

playground take the pressure off physical education teachers to

run programming during every noon hour and help cut down on

the number of negative playground incidences. The workshop

will focus on how to set up a PALS program in your school

(board), go over some of the resources we have discovered and

explore how this model can be used in the junior high and high

school levels.

The program is geared for youth ages 9 - 12 boys and girls. The

entire program is designed so that the player has a positive

experience learning the game of volleyball. The game can be

played indoors, outdoors on grass or on the beach. It can be

played in school, community centres, volleyball clubs etc.

Mini Volleyball

Volleyball Nova Scotia

Mini-Volley is an initiative developed by Volleyball Canada to

aid elementary school teachers in introducing volleyball to their

students. Volleyball has traditionally been viewed as a difficult

sport to introduce to young children, but it doesn?t have to be.

With the simple modifications that Mini-Volley offers, teachers

can easily provide their children with a fun and rewarding

volleyball experience.

Wilderness & Remote First Aid

The workshop is an experiential based 3 hour workshop designed

for teachers participating in outdoor or wilderness activities that

will be a few hours or more from advanced medical care. This will

be on an introduction and overview of practical skills, decisionmaking,

dealing with the outdoor environment, highlighting

the need to gain further training. Injury prevention, accessing

emergency medical care, improvising first aid supplies and

long-term care are the focus, based on the Canadian Red Cross

wilderness and remote first aid program.

Sledge Hockey

St. Francis Xavier University

Sledge hockey is a sport that was designed to allow participants

who have a physical disability to play the game of ice hockey.

Sledge hockey (also known as sled hockey in the United States

was invented in the early 1960?s in Stockholm, Sweden at a

rehabilitation center. It is currently one of the most popular

sports in the Paralympic Games. This session will be a hands-on

experience for all participants.

Presentation is an instructors course in the NCCP. Introduction

to competition part ?A? for high school PE teachers who have

students involved with a leadership course in their school. PE

teachers will be trained to deliver the program to their students.

As well this PE teacher training will allow them to deliver the

program to community coaches who coach in the school

system.
